The Ri-Bhoi Presbyterian Synod (RBP Synod) stands as a beacon of spiritual growth and community service in Meghalaya, India. Rooted in the legacy of Welsh missionary Rev. T. Jerman Jones, who established churches across nine villages in the Ri-Bhoi area in the late 19th century, the Synod has evolved into a vibrant ecclesiastical body committed to preaching the Gospel and uplifting lives.

Historical Foundations The RBP Synod traces its origins to the Ri-Bhoi Presbytery, which was formed in 1971 after a series of bifurcations from the Shillong Presbytery. In 1994, two Presbyteries—Ri-Bhoi Mihngi and Ri-Bhoi Sepngi—united to propose the formation of a Synod. The Presbyterian Church of India granted a provisional Synod in 1996, and a full-fledged Synod was inaugurated on 27th September 1998 by Rev. Jathanga Ngirsim.

Mission and Vision The Synod’s mission is threefold: Communion: Fostering unity among believers. Participation: Encouraging active involvement in church life. Mission: Spreading the Gospel and serving humanity. It aims to make the church self-reliant through education, healthcare, and economic development initiatives.

Units and Outreach The RBP Synod operates through various committees and units: SAELD Committee: Offers vocational training in weaving, tailoring, and embroidery. Hospital Committee: Conducts health awareness programs and initiatives. Bible Society Committee: Organizes annual conferences. Mission and Evangelism: Oversees 16 home mission fields and social missions like children’s homes and educational institutions.

Looking Ahead As the RBP Synod continues to grow, it remains committed to its founding principles while adapting to the evolving needs of its congregations. With a strong foundation in faith and service, it exemplifies the transformative power of community-led ministry. Would you like this article tailored for a newsletter, blog post, or church bulletin?
